Winter Giants

There are some truly strange fish in nature, and the anglerfish is certainly one of them. Lophius piscatorius (Linnaeus, 1758) and Lophius budegassa (Spinola, 1807), known respectively as anglerfish and budego , are the protagonists of our discussion here. These are rare fish to observe alive in their natural habitat, once very common, but now obviously rare because they were so tasty to humans, and therefore the object of overfishing and reckless fishing.

Often mistaken and confused for one another due to their very similar appearance, which makes it difficult to identify them precisely upon superficial examination, Mediterranean frogs are spectacular monstrosities. Perhaps even terrifying in appearance to some, they become fascinating when studied through the eyes of those who seek the art of nature and its many forms in the sea. For the attentive and passionate diver, it will not be impossible to distinguish the two variants, partly by color, partly by certain details that we will learn to notice with practical experience.
