Genoa, December 15, 2023 – On Friday, December 15, at 5:30 pm, the Ansaldo Foundation – Leonardo Group will host the presentation of the book "Andrea Doria: a corner of the homeland," written by Andrea Murdock Alpini and published by Magenes.
The book, in addition to recounting the life of the Andrea Doria, presents the results obtained during the underwater expedition " Un lembo di Patria," which featured the author of the book and which departed from Genoa last July for New York and thence to the Atlantic Ocean. The international mission, coordinated by Phy Diving Equipment, aimed to document the state of conservation of the wreck of the famous turbofan, launched at the Ansaldo Naval Shipyard in Genoa Sestri Ponente in 1951. The expedition was sponsored by the Department of Sport of the Municipality of Genoa and the Ansaldo Foundation.

In addition to the author, the presentation will be attended by Sergio Gambino, Councillor for Security, Local Police and Civil Protection of the Municipality of Genoa, Lorenzo Fiori, former Director of the Ansaldo Foundation, and Claudia Cerioli, Head of Historical Archives and Training at the Ansaldo Foundation.
The book retraces the events of the famous and luxurious flagship, which sank during its 101st voyage from Genoa to New York on 26 July 1956 , not only through words but also through a rich repertoire of images and archive documents, some of which have never been published, which tell various behind-the-scenes stories of that night in Nantucket, the American trial and the human experiences between the crew, VIPs and passengers aboard the Italian ocean liner.
This volume aims to present the famous ocean liner in a new light. In recent years, the author has returned to the wreck several times on various diving expeditions and has also spent considerable time at the Ansaldo Foundation, gathering information and materials that would allow him to paint a new profile of one of the most beautiful yet controversial Italian ships. Throughout his research, Andrea Murdock Alpini has gathered extensive materials that have gone on to form his own private collection, some of which are now available on the Ansaldo Foundation's Archimondi website, the platform for online consultation of digitized archival documents.
During the presentation, for the first time ever, images will also be shown from the dive carried out on the bow of the M/S Stockholm, which lies just a few miles away from the Andrea Doria.
Andrea Murdock Alpini will thus tell an untold story of the elegant lady of the sea , rescued from the dust of time through photographs and underwater films that testify to the current state of conservation of the wreck on the ocean floor.

Finally, the author will donate to the Ansaldo Foundation one of the twelve commemorative plates created for the underwater expedition " Un Lembo di Patria" by artist Emanuela Rossato . The first plate in the series was placed on the wreck of the Andrea Doria on July 26, 2023, to commemorate the anniversary of its sinking.
At the end of the meeting, the public will be able to take part in a guided tour featuring original documents relating to Italian shipbuilding and the Andrea Doria.
“ The Andrea Doria, as tall as a fortress, as vast as a city, ” will thus be able to relive, in the pages of this book, the glories of the past while looking to the future of a new world.
