Jacket, plate, wing, mono or double-bore, Hogarth configuration, sidemount…
Most commercial training agencies do not typically require a specific equipment configuration during first level open circuit training, but simply list the minimum standard equipment needed and require the instructor to use the same configuration as the student during the course.
In this scenario, there is no prohibition for the instructor to choose one of the above-mentioned configurations even for basic recreational level courses, provided, of course, that all skills can be performed correctly by the student.
Given these different setup options, it's essential that the instructor, right from the first lesson, serve as a role model and example, demonstrating the correct equipment setup and hose placement. Monkey see, monkey do, they say: the students' first impressions will impact how they set up their own equipment in the future, when they dive independently with their buddies.
Especially in recreational diving, in my opinion, proper management of the backup air source must be given primary importance, especially given the almost infinite possibilities offered by the numerous brands and models of BCDs available on the market. It's essential to remember that the backup air source must be secured in an accessible location and must be accessible and detached quickly and easily.
Too many times, in my daily work, I've seen divers (and instructors alike) simply bend the yellow hose and push it through a random D-ring on the BCD! Furthermore, in any shop or dive center we visit, we see on the shelves a vast array of hooks of all shapes and colors, "designed" to attach the alternative air source to the BCD via the hose or, even worse, directly to the snorkel... Not to mention more or less homemade solutions involving the use of O-rings, plastic ties, bungees, and scraps of neoprene placed mostly without knowing what they're doing!
When deciding how to attach the alternative air source to the jacket, we should ask ourselves at least the following questions:
- Will I be able to locate and access the alternative air source as quickly as possible, should the need arise?
- How much force will I need to free the secondary regulator from its hook?
- Am I sure I won't damage (or worse, lose!) the mouthpiece if I pull too hard?
- If necessary, will my buddy be able to locate and disconnect my backup air source on its own without my active cooperation?

In my personal experience, the best solution is always the simplest. In recreational diving, where jacket-type BCDs are mostly used, simply bend the octopus hose gently and insert it into the dedicated pocket located just under the right armpit.
If, however, we opt for more technical equipment such as a harness with a plate and rear volume bag, let's always remember that these models were designed for use with specific configurations: in these cases, let's seek advice from our instructors and, if necessary, take dedicated courses, rather than inventing customized and often ineffective solutions!
