Aliens in the Sea, a Project for and with Citizens.

The Participatory Project “Aliens in the sea”, of a scientific-cultural nature, and which will last two years, consists of the collection of data on a group of 19 alien plant and animal species, in Sicilian waters including those of the small islands surrounding it, in order to monitor their spread and also create a database on their distribution and threat levels.

The project also aims to raise public awareness and the most affected groups (fishermen, sportsmen, yachtsmen, etc.) about the problem of biological invasions through accurate information.

To participate in the initiative, aimed at all residents and non-residents, it will be sufficient to report sightings of the indicated species, by sending data (e.g. location, date, number of individuals, % coverage, depth, ...) and photos via SMS, email, Facebook page of the Project or by filling out a specific form downloadable from facebook page and from STEBICEF Department website, where it will also be possible to download informational materials and a poster listing the species whose presence should be reported. At the conclusion of the Project, a report will be available on the Project's Facebook page, and the data collected will be published in a scientific publication. The Project's coordinators are Dr. Anna Maria Mannino, a senior researcher at the STEBICEF Department of the University of Palermo and the Project's Scientific Director, and Dr. Paolo Balistreri, who has been studying alien species for several years.

Rophilema nomadicaThe Suez jellyfish is a highly stinging species that tends to proliferate. It can cause damage to both beach tourism and fishing by clogging nets.
